More about this tool

How it works

Validate a Pageboard project, count its references and tags, and export a self-contained HTML contact sheet and editable project file.

  • Validates the native Pageboard format, text limits, safe HTTP(S) links, screenshot data and the four-megabyte project budget before reporting.
  • Counts entries, favorites, screenshots, source links, types, platforms and tags. Counts describe saved metadata; they do not evaluate the quality or accessibility of referenced websites.
  • The HTML sheet embeds allowed screenshot data, escapes user text, restricts page content with a CSP, and uses safe links that open only on a user click. No remote page or image is fetched.
  • Both exports can contain private notes or screenshots. Editor links embed project data in their fragment; larger projects receive a downloadable file instead.

The generated page contains your notes, links and embedded images. Share it only with intended recipients.

How to use the Reference Board Inspector

Validate a Pageboard project, count its references, tags and moodboard cards, and get a standalone HTML sheet to share.

What it is for

Before you share a reference board, hand it to a colleague or let an agent work with it, you want to know what is inside: how many references, how many have screenshots and links, which tags are used, and whether the file is valid at all. The Reference Board Inspector reads a Pageboard project and answers exactly that.

It also produces two downloads: a standalone, read-only HTML sheet with your references, notes, tags and embedded screenshots, and a clean copy of the editable project. The HTML sheet opens in any browser without Pageboard, so it is a good way to show a board to someone who only needs to look.

The inspector only reads the project. It does not judge the quality or accessibility of the referenced websites and never loads them.

Worked example

Run the first example, which inspects the starter board "A small collection". The tool answered: "Inspected a board with 4 references. It uses 7 distinct tags."

The metrics were:

Worked example
MetricValue
References4
Favorites1
Screenshots0
Source links0
Moodboard cards5

The tag counts showed Typography on two references and six other tags once each; the sections were Portfolio, Editorial, Shop and Event, split evenly between desktop and mobile. The project measured 1,664 bytes. Because the starter board contains fictional prompts only, there are no screenshots or links – a real board of yours will show higher numbers there.

The second example inspects an empty board called "Research ideas": 0 references, 0 tags, 104 bytes – a quick way to check that an empty project is still valid.

How to read the result

  • Screenshots and Source links tell you how complete your references are. A reference without either is hard to revisit later.
  • Moodboard cards counts cards on the spatial moodboard, including notes and color swatches.
  • Download visual board HTML is the shareable sheet. Links in it open only when someone clicks them; it loads no outside images or scripts.
  • Download editable board and the Open in Pageboard link carry the full project, including screenshots and notes.
  • The report.bytes value shows how close you are to the 4 MB limit of a board; screenshots take most of the space.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Paste the complete .pageboard.json file. A partial copy or another app's JSON is rejected with "Choose a Pageboard project."
  • Both downloads contain your private notes and screenshots. Check them before sending them to anyone.
  • To share only part of a board, filter it in Pageboard and use Export → Selection as HTML instead.
  • An error about a screenshot usually means the image data was edited by hand; only PNG, JPEG and WebP data under 300 KB are accepted.
  • Use the inspector in automations to verify a project an agent produced before you open it.

FAQ

Does the HTML sheet include the moodboard?

No. The sheet lists the references as cards. Export the moodboard from Pageboard as a PNG image if you want to share the arrangement.

Why are there no screenshots in the example?

The starter boards contain original fictional prompts and deliberately no screenshots of real websites. Your own boards include the images you added.

Can the inspector repair a broken project?

No. It validates and reports the first problem it finds, such as an invalid link or a duplicate reference ID. Fix that field and run it again.
